| Directors' Notes |
| Set in the late Victorian era, in a large house
once well maintained but now impoverished and run down, Angel
Street is a powerful mystery story threading through a vale
of physical and psychological domestic violence.
In this house lives a vulnerable young woman and her sociopathic
husband. Something strange is happening in that household, signalled
by the gaslights; events which terrify Bella. There were no avenues
of escape for the women of that time unless they were very wealthy
or had a loving family. Help arrives in the form of a genial and
kindly man - a retired policeman - but will he be in time?
This play, which opened on Broadway in 1941, starred Vincent Price
and Judith Evelyn and was made into a movie, Gaslight, in 1944,
starring Ingred Bergman and Charles Boyer.
