"I've often wondered how people raised in our great cities
ever develop any knowledge of humankind. People who gro up in small
towns get to know each other so much more closely than they do in
cities." - William Inge.
Though not as renowned as other great American playwrights of the
mid 20th century, William Inge‚s body of work, which includes
"Come
Back, Little Sheba," "Splendor in the Grass," and
"Picnic," stands as a
strong positive statement celebrating small town America. "Bus
Stop"
is a romantic comedy in which Inge chose to address the intense,
universal emotion of loneliness and how each individual deals with
loneliness in their own unique way while reinforcing the openness
and
concern of his heartland characters. Love, caring, acceptance and
surrender are the methods lightheartedly used to combat loneliness
in
this story. "Bus Stop" could have been a very dreary,
depressing tale
of several lonely and unconnected characters who pas in the night,
yet
fail to significantly touch each other‚s lives. Fortunately,
Inge‚s
delightful characters interact in meaningful, positive ways that
affect
each other deeply. At the conclusion, we are left with the wonderful
bright promise of hope. We hope you enjoy our version of "Bus
Stop" as
much as we have enjoyed producing it.
